NZTA Celebrates One of Our Outstanding Road Workers

We are extremely proud that one of our own has been nominated as the NZTA STMS of the Week.

Josephine, affectionately known as Mama Jo, from the TMNZ Palmerston North branch, embodies the spirit of leadership and care, taking on a nurturing role while leading her team on the road. Her primary focus is ensuring the safety of both her team and the public, making sure everyone gets to and from home safely, whether they are traveling or working around our sites.

With over 23 years of experience in the roading industry, Josephine has seen it all, and she now generously shares her knowledge and experience with the younger members of TMNZ, acting as inspiration to those just starting their careers in this field.

Josephine’s role sees her responsible for crew management and the implementation of approved traffic management on various worksites. She mentors traffic management teams in the art of setting up, monitoring, and packing down safe work zones, which allows workers to complete their work safely and efficiently.

Having seen and experienced almost everything on the road, Josephine remains enthusiastic about the industry's shift towards digitisation and innovative methodologies that enhance safety and efficiency. Her dedication to reducing risks and building a stronger Palmerston North branch is truly commendable.

One of her most enjoyable worksites in recent memory is the State Highway 57 / Tararua Roundabout just outside Levin. The roundabout is part of the Ōtaki to North of Levin project, improving safety by a busy intersection and providing a future connection to the new state highway. Being on this job has given Josephine a behind-the-scenes look at how these new infrastructures will benefit people once it’s completed.

Josephine loves creating a safe environment for her team, both as part of the TMNZ team, as well as ensuring physical safety when out on road work sites. She is currently focused on digitisation and implementing new methodologies helping her team stay safe so they can return home to their loved ones each night.

Josephine’s advice to the public:  “When you see roadworkers out on the road, travel safely through their sites. Give them space by following any instructions you receive, and give them a friendly wave for their tremendous work.”
